Thornavon Sunday League Cup 2006

15th May 2006 - Thornavon Sunday League Cup Final

AFC Pegasus 3 - 2 AFC Phoenix
(a.e.t)

Wivenhoe Town FC, Broad Lane, Wivenhoe

Referee: S.Woods
Assistants: A.Arnot & S.Tovey

The game started with AFC Pegasus having the setting sun at their backs and after only 7 minutes play Michael Lyness slotted the ball home to put AFC Pegasus into a 1 - 0 lead.

During the first 30 minutes AFC Pegasus had much of the territorial advantage although they were unable to create many scoring chances.

After half an hour's play AFC Phoenix began to raise their game mounting more pressure onto their opponents and with 37 minutes played David Walkley struck a well placed shot wide of Kevin Ward the AFC Pegasus goalkeeper and into the corner of the net to level the scores. (1 - 1)

Less than a minute later AFC Phoenix were back in the opposing penalty area and were unlucky not to take the lead when a neat shot hit the AFC Pegasus crossbar.

In first half stoppage time AFC Phoenix striker Rob Thorne collected the ball just inside the opposing half, took the ball forward, rounded the goalkeeper, and put AFC Phoenix 2 - 1 ahead.

In the second half with AFC Pegasus showing more urgency the game flowed from end to end with both sides having scoring chances. After 85 minutes a cross from the left found Glen Cowans unmarked at the far post and he coolly headed home for the equaliser. (2 - 2)

With the pace of the game becoming more frantic neither team was able to break the deadlock and so with the score at 2 - 2 after 90 minutes the match went into extra time.

The first half of extra time continued to be played at a frantic pace but neither side was able to find the net.

With play still flowing from end to end it was only after 110 minutes of play that AFC Pegasus again took the lead when Simon Smithen headed the ball home. (3 - 2)

In the final minutes, with players from both teams going down with cramp, AFC Phoenix continued to fight for every ball but were unable to pierce the AFC Pegasus defence again.

An enjoyable game was well controlled by referee Steve Woods and his able assistants Adrian Arnot and Steev Tovey.

Full Time: AFC Pegasus 3 - 2 AFC Phoenix.
